Discovering Gozo's Blue Hole - Malta

If you’re visiting Malta the blue hole is definitely on the list. I visited Gozo on my boat with a family from England. I dare say we went a little early in the season by going in April. I recommend going later in the season so that the water is a little warmer (unless you love cold water like my friend who was there). We just took snorkels and swimsuits and went there for the morning. Because of the closed location, we were there all morning and no tourists found us. I first went diving inside the pool then I climbed out and went over to the ocean on the other side of the pool where I found the water a lot warmer. There I went swimming and nearly got stung by a jellyfish twice. Luckily if you are scared of jellyfish, there are none inside the pool.

The Blue Hole is a natural swimming pool on the coast of Gozo, an island outside Malta. I have put the link below. The pool is found by climbing over rocks and down a staircase from the square above it. This path is why most people can’t find the blue hole; because it is so hard to get to but if you persevere the prize it is worth it. The blue hole isn’t what has the most interesting history, it's what you can see from the hole that is amazing. The Azure Window has fascinated people for as long as we know it has existed. It was a huge arch right about next to the blue hole. As the weather wore on it slowly became smaller and smaller.  Finally one huge storm on the 8th of March 2017 at 9:40 am. Reports say a wave crashed over it and when the wave had sunk back into the sea; the arch was gone. What is left now is a face naturally carved into the cliff. I learned about this arch at a small little ocean center near the blue hole (link below). The center is free but accepts donations and I highly recommend you go visit. The lady who runs it is very sweet and the center is charming. Today the blue hole stands a beautiful clear blue lagoon perfect for swimming and diving. If you go in the waters right outside the hole you can look down and see the fallen rock from the Azure window. I even stood on a part of it and was able to have my body above water.

Across from the blue hole, there are many intriguing underwater caves fun to explore. If you just feel like wading, parts of the blue hole are very shallow and good for just standing. You can also just float on the top of the pool letting the sun stream down on you and the cool water soak into you. If you’re like my Dad you could also just choose to free dive. He dove under the underwater arch just holding his breath.

The Blue Hole is an amazing place for Scuba diving and there is a scuba gear rental shop (link below) right nearby. The blue hole is separated by a wall of rock that goes down 6 meters (18 feet) that then breaks off and you can dive under.

I hope you enjoy the stunning beauty and underwater mystery of the Blue Hole!
